ICFAI University, Jharkhand conducted an Online Panel Discussion on “Career Opportunities in Electrical Vehicle Sector” as part of Charcha manch Series. Panelists were Mr Panduranga Rao, Senior Vice President (Technical Operations and Strategic Initiatives), Altair India and Mr Ashutosh Dugal, Head-Customer Care, Electric Vehicles, Mahindra & Mahindra. Prof O R S Rao, Vice-Chancellor of the University was the moderator. A number of students, faculty members and industry personnel participated from across India.
Welcoming the participants to the panel discussion, Prof O R S Rao, Vice-Chancellor of the University said, “In India, Road Transportation is one of the major sources of air pollution, which causes a number of health issues. Besides, due to the need for huge import of petroleum crude products, costs of Petrol and disel have been going up. Electrical Vehicle (EV) is a good solution to address it. Due to rapid advances in Electrical Technologies, coupled with Government Promotional Policies and initiatives like FAME-II, it is expected that in the next 5 years, about 15 % of the vehicles on road will be electrical or hybrid vehicles. All major automotive companies have been making large investments. Besides, Ola Electric is setting up the world’s largest Electric 2 Wheeler plant in India”. “Electrical Mobility Ecosystem , which includes charging stations , will throw open a lot of career and entrepreneurship opportunities for the graduating students. Our University have already included EV as a part of Curriculum for B. Tech and DIT (Polytechnic) Programs of the University so that our students are prepared to seize the emerging career opportunities ”, added Prof Rao.
Addressing the participants, Mr Panduranga Rao explained the developments in Electrical Vehicle Technology, to make the vehicles greener, lighter, safer and smarter and reduce the vehicle cost , so as to make the Electrical Vehicles more affordable. He also added that EVs will provide huge career opportunities in a range of associated services like sales, charging, maintenance, logistics, recycling, data services, analytics etc. Besides, new business models are emerging in areas like battery rentals, battery charging and swapping , which will provide a lot of opportunities for entrepreneurship.
Elaborating the technologies used in Electrical Vehicles, Mr Ashutosh Dugal said “A range of diverse technologies like Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and IT Technologies are used in design of the EVs. Besides, managing the enabling Infrastructure and Support Systems like Battery Charging, Navigation, Controls etc needs skills in diverse areas like IT, management, law. So students pursuing programs in various disciplines may look for career opportunities, when the EV sector grows”.
The panelists answered a lot of questions from the participants in areas like Retrofitting EVs in petrol/diesel vehicles, disposal of used batteries, affordability, cost of operations, distance that can be traveled between two recharges etc.
